online courses for young scholars
taught by expert instructors
CTY offers 170+ online courses in flexible formats guided by expert instructors who specialize in teaching advanced concepts to bright elementary, middle, and high school students. We'd like you to meet some of them!
Conversation is critical to learning a new language. But “kids can be reluctant to speak in a traditional classroom because they worry classmates might comment on their pronunciation,” says CTY Online Arabic instructor Sumer Majid. This is where online learning really shines. “In my virtual classroom, my students can speak freely. They can practice conversation by taking a picture and making a recording of their voice describing it in Arabic. They can show me their progress through written assignments and one-on-one conversation sessions. If they are uncertain about new concepts, they can replay our classroom sessions. My students have so many opportunities to practice the language that by the end of the course, even beginning students can speak and write in Arabic.”
With more than 30 years of classroom experience, CTY Online grammar instructor Madeleine Keller is used to new students writing brief answers on their first assignment. She knows it won’t last, especially once she starts sharing her feedback and their writing skills develop. “Through personal weekly feedback, I can address each student’s needs,” Keller says. In addition to written critiques, she can explain a complex topic by phone to a student or create a worksheet just for them. Each week her students’ assignments become more detailed, complex, and creative. “As they progress, my students are doing profound thinking about language and they let their creativity shine.”
Computer Science Instructor
CTY Online computer science instructor Robert Sigillito doesn’t mind when his students ask “why.” In fact, he encourages it. That’s because he wants his students to not just show what they’ve learned; he wants them to understand their real-world applications. “When I learned programming in college it always seemed I was doing these silly exercises in my courses but no one ever said why,” says Sigillito, a system engineer with two decades of experience. “Explaining to Scratch programming students why they need to define something as a function now so it can save time later can help them understand this is not some random assignment,” he says. “My students are motivated to learn. I want to help them by bringing the material to life.”
